Frequently Asked Questions

Architecture, That’s A Bit Dry And Boring, Isn’t It?

Not a bit of it! My tours have been noted for my enthusiasm and humour. I like to look for the interesting stories behind the buildings. Give a tour a try; you might be surprised!

Are Dogs Allowed?

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome on my tours (and Fothergill’s pub at the end of the Watson Fothergill Walk is dog friendly.)

Are You An Architect?

No. I studied as an art historian, and I am a keen historical researcher with many years of experience in creating and promoting events.

Can I Book A Talk Or Tour For My Group?

Yes. Lucy is available for bookings for groups of friends, U3As, Local History Societies, WIs and other groups. Please send an email via this form for terms and availability.

Can I Book A Tour On A Date Of My Choice?

Yes. Lucy is available for private bookings for any of the advertised tours. Sometimes bespoke tours looking at Nottingham’s architecture may be available. Please send a message via the form for more details.

Can I Bring My Baby?

If you’d like to bring an infant in a buggy or pram, you are welcome, but please contact the organiser in advance to check for space or any other requirements.

Can I Pay On The Day?

If you cannot pay online, please contact Lucy directly to arrange paying on the day.

Can I Take Photos/Videos

Yes, you are most welcome to take photos and share them online with Watson Fothergill Walk’s social media channels. Please do not shoot or share video of the tour guide without first seeking her permission.

I also conduct tours about other architects like Thomas Chambers Hine, and tours that look at buildings of the Art Deco period.

How Far Do We Walk?

The Watson Fothergill Walk is approximately 2km (just under 1 mile).

How Long Does The Tour/Talk Last?

My main tours (Watson Fothergill Walk, Hine Hike, Carrington Crawl) take 2 hours. Some of the other tours are shorter. Please check the description for each event for approximate running times.

I’m Local, Why Should I Do A Tour?

Most of the people who have taken part in the Watson Fothergill Walk over the years are local to Nottingham and surrounding areas. On nearly every tour, someone points out that they have passed something hundreds of times and not noticed it before. There’s always something new to learn about the architecture of a city and the people who built it.

Is It Just You?

Yes. I’m freelance, and this is my business. You can find out more about me here.

What Happens If I am Running Late?

Please try to arrive on time for tours. If you’re running late the Watson Fothergill Walk remains close to the start point for the first 20 minutes or so. The other tours vary. Please contact Lucy.

What Happens If It Rains?

The tour will go ahead in most weather, rain or snow. If a tour has to be cancelled by the organiser in the event of adverse weather conditions, a refund or replacement ticket can be issued.

What If I Have To Cancel or Postpone?

If you’re unable to come on a tour, please try to let me know at least 5 working days ahead of the tour date, and I will endeavour to issue a refund or swap for a new date. No-shows on the day are not eligible for a refund.

What Is The Refund Policy?
The refund policy is available on the website here.
What Should We Wear/Bring?

Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for city walking and be prepared for the changeable British weather. You might want to bring a water bottle for hydration.

Where Are My Tickets?

Your tickets will be part of the confirmation email you receive from the seller, either this website or external ticket site.

Who Was Watson Fothergill?

Watson Fothergill, originally named Fothergill Watson, was an architect who worked mainly in Nottingham between the 1870s and 1900. His characteristic Gothic Revival-inspired buildings are part of what makes the cityscape of Nottingham unique.

Why Don’t You Do Discounts?

I am totally independent of outside funding and therefore not able to offer discounts.
